Supkultur – SUP station Strandbad Mythenquai✔ Verified

rental · SUP

On the Enge side of the lower lake, Supkultur runs its biggest day-rental station inside Strandbad Mythenquai, a short way along the quay from Belvoirpark. Over a hundred boards from Indiana and Fanatic, both hard and inflatable, are handed out from staffed stations, so you can simply turn up, take a board and paddle out along the western shore with the city behind you and the Alps ahead. Children and adults can book beginner courses or private lessons here, and the programme also includes SUP yoga and a guided city tour. It suits first-timers who want staff on hand as much as regulars after an hour on the water. Kayaks can be hired too if you would rather sit.

Good to know: Go early: Zurich's transport authority notes that the mood on the lake is at its best in the morning. Note that the Strandbad's own entry fee is not part of the rental.

Supkultur – SUP station Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen✔ Verified

rental · SUP

Over on the eastern shore, at Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen on Bellerivestrasse, this is Supkultur's second walk-up station, a handy choice if you live in Seefeld or Riesbach. The setup mirrors Mythenquai: boards by the hour, kayaks for anyone who prefers to sit, and courses or private lessons that can be booked in advance. From here you launch onto the wider stretch of water towards Zollikon, with views of the city and, on clear days, the Alps. It works well for beginners who want a staffed base, and for confident paddlers heading off on a longer loop along the Gold Coast side.

Good to know: In changeable weather the bath can close early and the station may not be staffed, so ring ahead before you set off. Groups of five or more can reserve; everyone else is first come, first served.

Supkultur – SUP station Seebad Utoquai✔ Verified

rental · SUP

At the historic Seebad Utoquai, close to Bellevue and the opera house, Supkultur keeps a station reserved for subscription holders rather than casual renters. If you paddle several times a week, this is the most central launch on the lake: you step off the wooden bath straight into the lower basin, with the Grossmünster towers and the quays of the old town close by. There is no hourly hire here, so first-timers should head to Mythenquai or Tiefenbrunnen instead. Regulars like it for after-work sessions and early mornings, when the water in front of the city is at its calmest and you can be back at your desk soon after.

Good to know: Before your first session you need a short in-person introduction (about 20 minutes including paperwork); book it at least 24 hours ahead.

SUPSWISS – Stand Up Paddle school & rental✔ Verified

school · SUP

Down in Wollishofen, next to the Rote Fabrik and the Ziegel oh Lac restaurant, SUPSWISS teaches stand-up paddling from the community centre on Bachstrasse. It calls itself a certified SUP school, and the focus is on courses at several levels rather than pure walk-up hire, although boards can be rented separately. Beyond the home bay it has run adventure tours on other Swiss lakes, plus themed sessions such as sunset yoga and paddling with your dog. The southern end of the city shore is less busy than the central quays, which makes it a calm place to learn. Check the current offer before you go: the old web address now forwards to kiteswiss.ch.

Good to know: Reach it by tram 7 or S-Bahn to Wollishofen, or arrive by lake boat.

Bootsvermietung Enge✔ Verified

rental · pedal boats, rowing boats, motorboats, boat rental

Right beside the Seebad Enge and its Badi bar on Mythenquai, this hire stand has one of the most central jetties on the lake. The fleet is a mix of 1970s pedal boats, rowing boats for anyone who wants a workout, and motorboats with petrol or electric engines that need no licence. The unusual extra is a sauna boat for up to six people, with the lake as your plunge pool. Out on the lower basin you get a wide view back over the city. Families, couples and groups of friends all fit, and the site is listed as accessible for prams and many wheelchair users.

Good to know: Pedalos cannot be reserved, so arrive early on summer weekends; some motorboats can be booked online in advance. Bring cash for the deposit and an ID card or passport.

Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG) – lake cruises✔ Verified

tours & cruises · boat tours

From the piers at Bürkliplatz, at the lake end of Bahnhofstrasse, the Zürichsee-Schifffahrtsgesellschaft runs the lake's scheduled boats, including paddle steamers such as the Stadt Zürich. Three round trips are pitched at visitors: a one-hour mini cruise down to Wollishofen, a 90-minute loop to Thalwil and Erlenbach, and a long day out to Rapperswil and back. You see the city and both shores from the water rather than the road. Themed evening boats add fondue, brunch, barbecue or dance nights. The shorter cruises make an easy first look at the lake for visitors and families alike.

Good to know: The mini and short cruises are free with the Zürich Card. In dry spells low water can restrict sailings, so check the ZSG timetable page on the day.

Urbansurf Zürich – standing city wave✔ Verified

centre · surfing

Tucked between the railway tracks and Frau Gerolds Garten in Zurich West, a few steps from Hardbrücke station, Urbansurf is an outdoor standing wave close to the Prime Tower. Up to six surfers share each 30-minute slot, taking turns on an endless wave framed by padded walls and deep enough water to make falls forgiving. Instructors supervise and help novices find their feet, while experienced riders can bring their own short board. Around the pool there is a bar, food and regular live music, and spectators get in free, so it works as an evening out even for friends who stay dry. Few places let you surf in the middle of a city.

Good to know: Bring an ID card or vehicle registration document to check in. Children need to be good swimmers, weigh at least 30 kg and wear a helmet, with an adult present.

TSK Zürich – PADI 5 Star dive centre✔ Verified

centre · scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling

Stauffacherquai, on the Sihl in Kreis 4, is home to TSK Zürich, which describes itself as the largest dive school and shop in the region. It is a PADI 5 Star IDC centre with around 45 instructors, teaching everything from first try-dives and snorkelling to freediving, first aid and instructor-level courses, in German or English. Adaptive diving for people with disabilities is part of the programme. Lake Zurich is the home water, and the club side runs weekend trips, Sunday dive outings and events for non-divers too. The shop sells, rents and services gear, fills tanks, and has its own bar with beer on tap, which says something about the social atmosphere.

Good to know: For the Open Water course bring your own mask, snorkel, boots and fins plus a medical certificate under a year old; the rest of the kit is provided.

Tauchschule & Tauchshop Poseidon✔ Verified

school · scuba diving

In Seefeld, on Zollikerstrasse a few streets back from the lake, Poseidon combines a dive school, shop and workshop. Courses start with try-dives and run through nitrox, technical diving and rebreather training, with underwater photography, children's courses and teaching for divers with disabilities alongside. Pool sessions cover the basics before you head to the lake. The workshop handles regulator servicing and neoprene repairs, and the team fills nitrox and trimix, so technical divers come here for gas as much as for lessons. Reviews praise the instructors and the advice in the shop, and the school also leads trips to river sites in Ticino such as the Verzasca.

Good to know: Poseidon is the nearest listed fill station for the Tiefenbrunnen (WZT) shore dive, so it is a practical stop before a lake dive on the east shore.

Kindersegelschule Zürichsee✔ Verified

school · sailing

Children learn to sail in Optimist dinghies here, operating as a guest of the Zürcher Yacht Club on General-Guisan-Quai, right by Bürkliplatz and the Arboretum. No experience is needed for the beginner course: young sailors rig the sail, steer with the tiller, practise simple manoeuvres, learn a little theory and tie their first sailor's knots. Those who want more move on to an advanced course that teaches handling the boat in stronger wind, the path to becoming an Opti skipper. Lessons run as holiday courses or on Wednesdays or Fridays during term, so it fits around school. The setting, in the lower basin in front of the city, is about as central as sailing gets.

Good to know: Come by tram 7, 11 or 13 to Bürkliplatz. If you drive, park at Hafen Enge and walk about five minutes to the yacht club.

Segel- und Motorbootschule SMS Zürisee✔ Verified

school · sailing, motorboats, wakeboarding & water-ski, boat rental

Based on the Rote Fabrik site in Wollishofen, SMS Zürisee has its own jetty on the city's southern shore and teaches both sailing and motorboat driving, from first lessons up to the offshore licence. Alongside licence training it offers wakeboarding and wakesurfing behind its boats, and boats can also be rented. The mix of licence school and towed sports makes it unusual: you might come for your boat licence and come back for a wake session. Booking runs through its online portal, with lessons and rentals scheduled individually.

Good to know: The meeting point is given as Seestrasse 395, at the Rote Fabrik. Cancel at least 48 hours ahead for driving lessons and rentals, 24 hours for watersports.

Motorboot-Fahrschule Beni Winiger✔ Verified

school · motorboats

Beni Winiger is a federally recognised motorboat and sailing instructor who prepares learners for the Swiss boat licence, categories A and D, and says he has taken more than 3,500 candidates to the exam. The meeting point in Zurich is the Restaurant Seerose in Wollishofen, with a second base in Horgen on the left shore. Lessons are held only inside the official exam area, so every hour on the water rehearses the real test, and the boats have cabins and heating, which matters on a cold spring evening. Teaching is in German or English. It suits anyone who wants a straightforward, exam-focused route to driving a boat on Lake Zurich.

Good to know: The listing notes the lessons take place only in the exam area and the boats are heated, so early- and late-season lessons are realistic. Ask which meeting point applies (Wollishofen, Tiefenbrunnen, Horgen, Thalwil or Herrliberg are named).

Segel- und Motorbootsschule Beat Lang✔ Verified

school · sailing, motorboats

With more than 40 years of teaching behind it, Beat Lang's school trains sailors and motorboat drivers on the right shore of the lake, with courses held mainly in Uetikon am See and Stäfa. The modular system lets you book up to 16 weekly appointments, so you can fit lessons around work rather than taking a block week. Beyond the licence itself there is further training and preparation for offshore sailing. Lessons last between one and a half and two and a half hours depending on group size. Learning away from the city end of the lake means fewer crowds on the water.

Good to know: Students, apprentices and pupils get a 15 percent discount; book online or by phone.

Ceccotorenas – wakeboard school, SUP & pedalos Stäfa✔ Verified

school · wakeboarding & water-ski, SUP, pedal boats

At Stäfa harbour on the right shore, next to the village pedalo rental it also runs, Ceccotorenas is a wakeboard school with a boat and a driver for hire by the hour. Riders of all ages come for wakeboard, wakeskate and wakesurf coaching, and more experienced riders can try wakefoiling, which lifts you above the water even at low speed once you have the technique. Kit for all four disciplines can be hired. If towed sports are not your thing, there are SUP boards and pedalos, some with a slide, for a slower afternoon. It is one of the few places on the lake where a mixed group can split between action and lazing about.

Good to know: Opening times depend on season and weather, so check the website before travelling; Stäfa station is the nearest stop.

Segelschule Thomas Zwick✔ Verified

school · sailing

Thomas Zwick runs a small sailing school split across two age groups. Children and teenagers sail Optimists and Lasers at Kehlhof in Stäfa, in courses of five sessions spread over four levels, so a child can progress from first outing to confident dinghy sailor. Adults learn on keelboats from Feldbach and Stäfa on Lake Zurich, or near the town of Greifensee, mostly as private lessons. The adult side covers the Swiss D licence, spinnaker handling and refresher sessions for anyone who has not sailed in years. A reviewer describes a small club feel with a motivated team, which suits nervous beginners better than a large school.

Good to know: Life jackets are worn at all times on adult lessons, and lessons can be cancelled free of charge up to 72 hours ahead.

Schifffahrtsbetrieb Hensa – pedalos & boats Rapperswil✔ Verified

rental · pedal boats, motorboats, boat rental, boat tours

Down at Rapperswil harbour, below the old town and castle, Hensa hires out pedalos, a small electric boat called the E-Tuckerli, a lounge boat and motorboats, none of which need a licence. The obvious outing is across to Lützelau, the little wooded island off the shore, which takes a steady pedal and gives you somewhere to aim for. You can just as well drift in the bay with the Seedamm and the Upper Lake behind you. Families like the pedalos, and couples or friends tend to take the lounge boat. The harbour is a short walk from Rapperswil station, so it is easy to combine with a day in the town.

rental · kayak & canoe, SUP, rafting

Schmerikon harbour, at the far eastern tip of the Upper Lake, is where Kuster Sport keeps a self-service canoe and SUP station at Schmerikon harbour, while its shop on St. Gallerstrasse handles winter sports in the cold months. Kayaks, Canadian canoes, rafts and paddleboards can all be booked online or through the app at any hour. From here you can paddle out onto the Obersee, with the Linth plain and the Glarus mountains behind, or follow the Linth itself, which makes this a good starting point for a river-and-lake day. It suits people who want their own boat for a few hours without owning one, from couples to small groups in a raft.

Run by volunteers, the Verschönerungsverein (village improvement society) of Maur maintains a few boats on the eastern shore of the Greifensee and hires them out by the hour. It is a low-key, volunteer arrangement rather than a commercial hire stand: you contact the association to book. Motorboats are banned on the Greifensee apart from the passenger ferry, so the water stays quiet, with the Pfannenstiel hills rising behind the village. It suits anyone after a calm hour on the water rather than a busy harbour scene.

Good to know: Since 1 April 2025 the canton of Zurich has had a boat registration and cleaning rule, so ask the association what applies when you book.

Dive site Wassersportzentrum Tiefenbrunnen (WZT)✔ Verified

spot · scuba diving

Tiefenbrunnen's water sports centre, on Zurich's eastern shore, has a wide staircase with a handrail, or a jetty, to take you into the lake. The bottom drops to about 3 m beyond the edge, then slopes gently down to around 25 m, with the listed maximum at 30 m. Divers have placed a series of objects along the slope, including pipes, sunken boats, a diving bell, statues and signs, which give you something to navigate by. The gentle gradient makes it a popular training and buoyancy site, and reviewers recommend it for night dives. Poseidon on Zollikerstrasse is the nearest listed fill station.

Good to know: Parking is close to the entry; Poseidon in Seefeld is the nearest listed air fill.

Dive site Herrliberg (large car park)✔ Verified

spot · scuba diving

Herrliberg's large car park on Seestrasse, on the right shore, is only steps from an easy entry. The site is marked with buoys chained to the bottom, and a stepped rock wall runs from about 5 m down to 30 m, with seagrass meadows and plenty of fish in the shallows. Many divers do their first open-water dives here with an instructor, so it is busy with training groups. There can be some current, and in summer you share the shore with swimmers, a snack stand and public toilets. Shops in Horgen, Wädenswil and Zurich are the nearest for fills.

Good to know: Parking is free at the large car park; watch out for swimmers at the entry in summer.

Dive site Halbinsel Au✔ Verified

spot · scuba diving

Deep wall diving is the draw at the Au peninsula near Wädenswil, and it is for advanced divers only. You enter left of the passenger-boat pier, descend to about 10 m where the wall begins, and follow it on your left shoulder towards 35–40 m. After five to seven minutes you reach a single standing stone, about 10 m off the wall, then a tree lying across the gap at around 40 m, and beyond it a fissured wall where burbot hide. On the way back small caves sit at 18–20 m and at 11 m. Two arm-thick intake pipes near the pier pillars mark the exit. The listed maximum depth is about 52 m.

Good to know: Passenger boats dock at the pier, with the first summer arrival at 10:32, so dive early and be out of the water before then.

Dive site Horn, Richterswil✔ Verified

spot · scuba diving

A little meadow with a bench at the Horn, the small headland in Richterswil beside the youth hostel, leads to a stone staircase into the water. The bottom starts as stone, turns to silt and opens into a seagrass meadow, with a maximum depth of about 10 m, which makes it a beginner-level shore dive. A training platform sits at about 5 m. Two dive schools are based in Richterswil, so you will often meet course groups. It is a relaxed, shallow site for a first lake dive or for checking new kit rather than one for deep exploration.

Good to know: The platform at 5 m is private property of the Local Diving school; register by phone before using it.

Dive site Rüschlikon, Pumphüsli✔ Verified

spot · scuba diving

The Pumphüsli site in Rüschlikon, on the left shore, has parking right next to the entry, toilets and a covered spot to change when it rains. A wide staircase with a railing takes you over a bottom of small stones straight out to about 5 m, where a bicycle saddle on a long pole marks a good place for the safety stop. Turning right brings you to a sunken boat at about 10 m. On the way back, dense weed beds at 5 m hold shoals of small fish and the occasional pike, with sunlight playing through the green water. It suits beginners and divers returning after a break.

Good to know: Use the bicycle saddle on its pole at about 5 m as your marker for the three-minute safety stop.

Dive site Greifensee, Maur harbour✔ Verified

spot · scuba diving

Beside the harbour in Maur on the Greifensee, divers enter about 50 m left of the boat landing using the rowing-boat ramp and jetty. You must swim only to the left: the harbour basin to the right is off limits. The muddy bottom slopes very gently to about 12 m, with roots, tree trunks and a few perch, and visibility is usually just 1–2 m, so good buoyancy matters. About 20 minutes out you reach a yacht mooring with chains and buoy lines, and fishing lines are common near the entry. Motorboats are banned on the lake apart from the ferry, and diving is allowed only at certain spots.

Good to know: Diving on the Greifensee is restricted to designated places; check the current rules with a local dive centre before you go.
